First and foremost, I am running to bring some balance to our town council. Currently, our 5 member council votes in lockstep on almost every issue, leaving many residents unrepresented. When Cheryl Stallings stepped down to run for County Commissioner, the remaining four members had an opportunity to provide this balance by selecting a new applicant. My wife, Christine was the leading vote getter of those not elected in 2021, losing by only a few hundred votes. Without a care for what the citizens of Apex voted for, she was not interviewed or considered by the current council. Instead, they selected Arno Zegerman, leaving the moderates and conservatives with no voice again.
Transportation: Heavy traffic in Apex is a result of rubber stamping high density housing by politicians whose goal is to keep building for tax revenue. This traffic congestion has made commuting more expensive, time consuming, and parking a nightmare in Apex. I will advocate for measured growth to ensure our infrastructure and resources are not overburdened by irresponsible town planning.
Taxes: Taxes have gone up nearly 13% in the last two years. That would be more palatable if the money was going to the issues that matter to our citizens. Voters approved two bonds specifically for finishing Apex Peakway, but the town council defied the will of Apex voters and redirected the funds to other pet projects. In fact the land required to complete construction has not even been purchased yet. Real estate prices have gone through the roof, making the eventual cost of the project even higher. We also have an empty bus driving around town at the taxpayer cost of $800,000.
Utilities: Has your power bill gone up? Mine has. The current council is providing subsidies for solar panels to be installed on Apex homes, while the rest of us are footing the bill. This is unfair and needs to change.
Safety: The crime rate in Apex is on the rise while the current council underfunds our police department putting residents at risk. Our valued police department is woefully understaffed. It's not uncommon for as little as four police cruisers to be patrolling all of Apex after dark, and the new police chief has handcuffed his own by not allowing them to run a license plate check on suspicious vehicles. As your new Apex Town Council member, improving safety will be a top priority.
